La música cuenta la historia.
Bomba came from enslaved Africans in seventeenth-century Puerto Rico, played on barrel drums.
Plena came later, from working Ponce in the early twentieth century; people called it the sung newspaper because the verses carried the news.
Both rhythms are still inside the salsa you hear today.
Bands play from the main stage through the afternoon and into the evening, with dancers and drummers between the sets. There is no fixed running order: come when you can and the music will be going.
